The Resume

    (December 16, 1867-January 18, 1951)
Born in Millisle, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
    Protestant missionary to India
First ministered to the ‘Shawlies’ of Belfast
    Founder of Dohnavur Fellowship
Wrote ‘Things as They Are: Mission Work in Southern India’ (1903), ‘His Thoughts Said… His Father Said’ (1951), ‘If’ (1953), ‘Edges of His Ways’ (1955), and ‘God's Missionary’ (1957)
Died in Dohnavur, Tamil Nadu, India

Why she might be annoying:

As a child, she often prayed that her eye color would change from brown to blue, but to no avail.
She also loved pinching her brother’s cheeks to make his eyes turn blue.
She was a bit of a troublemaker during her childhood, often causing pranks in the household.
Her initial destination for her ministry was Japan, but she often got sick there that she had to be sent to India due to the climate.
Due to her activities, she was often at odds with Hindu priests who frequently accused her of child kidnapping (which she technically was).
She refused to have a stone of any kind to mark her grave, so the children she raised put a birdbath inscribed with the word ‘Amma’, meaning ‘mother’ in Tamil.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her father died when she was 17, bringing financial difficulties to her family because he left behind a huge unpaid loan.
She had neuralgia, which made her bedridden for many weeks.
Having brown eyes instead of blue had proven to be a huge advantage for her during her time in India, as Indians tend to have brown eyes, helping her to blend in more easily.
She had to deal with her fellow missionaries and their lack of concern for the people they were supposed to minister to.
Her ministry rescued girls forced into temple prostitution and prevented many others from facing the same cruel fate.
She was a huge inspiration to other missionaries like Jim Elliot.
