World Leader
    (March 22, 1869-February 6, 1964)
Led Philippine independence movement after the Spanish-American War
Elected 1st President of the Philippines (January 29, 1899)
He quit school at age 14.
He joined a secret society opposing Spanish rule, came into conflict with its leader, Andrés Bonifacio, overthrew him and had him executed (May 10, 1897).
He headed American opposition in the Philippine-American War (1899-1902).
After the Americans captured him, he took an oath of allegiance to the U.S. (April 19, 1901) and issued a proclamation urging the surrender of all Filipino forces (flip-flopper).
He was paid 400,000 pesos to go into voluntary exile in Hong Kong, but used the money (with urging from the U.S.) to buy weapons and help start a successful revolution against Spain, ending the Spanish-American War (April-July 1898).
After he was captured by the Americans, he was beaten for three weeks and told he would be executed unless he pledged allegiance to the U.S.
During the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in World War II, he was used as an anti-American tool, forced to make speeches, sign bogus proclamations and make infamous radio addresses in support of the Japanese.
He lived to see his lifelong dream of full independence for his nation when the U.S. government gave full restoration and recognition of Philippine independence (July 4, 1946).
