World Leader

The Resume

    (November 14, 1889-May 27, 1964)
Leader of the Socialists in the Indian National Congress
1st Prime Minister of India (1947-1964)
    Nicknamed Pandit (Teacher) Nehru
    Father of Indira Gandhi

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a die-hard socialist.
He did not openly take sides in the Cold War but tacitly supported the Soviet Union.
He got the Indians into a disastrous border war with China (1962).
An anonymous letter posted in the Modern Review of Calcutta warned the Congress Party about Nehru's 'tendencies towards autocracy' and told them he needed to be stopped before he 'turned into Caesar.'
Years later, it emerged that Nehru wrote the letter himself.
His economic policies have been criticized for their government interventions that limited economic growth.
Though he disliked the armed forces, he did not object when India took over Hyderabad (1948) and Portuguese-colonized Goa (1961).
His government started the Pakistani feud over Kashmir when he stationed troops there.
He did not object to the Chinese conquest of Tibet.
Many believe his daughter Indira Gandhi is the daughter of Mahatma Gandhi.

Why he might not be annoying:

He became an Indian nationalist after the massacre at Amritsar.
He was agnostic but practiced Biblical principles (especially Luke 6:29).
He was a supporter and protege of Mohandas Gandhi.
He was jailed for a combined 14 years of his life for his non-violent civil disobedience campaigns.
He kept a bust of Mohandas Gandhi and a hand of Abraham Lincoln on his desk.
He called for an end to nuclear testing and was in favor of nuclear disarmament.
His 'Tryst with Destiny' speech is very well known in India and one of the world's most famous political speeches.
He popularized the 'Nehru jacket' which became a fashion craze in the 1960s.
He ruled India for 17 years.
In India, November 14 is celebrated as 'Children's Day' in memory of his love of children.
He said, 'My legacy to India is, hopefully, 400 million people capable of governing themselves.'
