Why he might be annoying:

He married his high school girlfriend, but they divorced after he revealed his sexual orientation to her.
A self-described socialist, he was one of the most left-wing figures in Canadian politics.
He served 14 days in jail for contempt of court after protesting logging in Clayoquot Sound (1994).
Religious Canadians protested when he submitted a petition to amend the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to remove 'God' from the preamble (1999).
After he said Israel was 'a terrorist state, guilty of murder and torture,' he was accused of being anti-Semitic (2002).
He resigned from office after admitted to stealing a ring worth $21,500 (April 15, 2004).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first openly gay member of the Canadian Parliament.
He supported aboriginal land claims.
He sponsored an amendment to Canada's hate crime laws to include crimes based on sexual orientation.
Although he suffered from bipolar disorder, he said there was no correlation between his mental condition and his theft.
He received a 'Hero Award' from the Canadian Bar Association (1999).
