    The original settlement of the native Berbers was destroyed by the Portuguese (1468).
    European colonists abandoned the area following an earthquake that leveled the town (1755).
    The French took control of the city after residents attacked French railway workers (1907).
    Suicide bombings by Islamic extremists killed 33 and injured 100 people (May 16, 2003).

    It was the site of the Casablanca Conference where Winston Churchill and FDR planned Allied strategy in Europe (January 14-24, 1943).
    It has a mild Mediterranean climate.
    It is one of the world's largest artificial ports.
    Its King Hassan II Mosque is the largest mosque outside of Saudi Arabia.
