Served as science-pilot for the SkyLab 2 mission (May 25, 1973-June 22, 1973)
NASA's senior science representative to Australia (1982-1983)
Director of the space and life science wing of the Johnson space center (1984-1987)

Why he might be annoying:

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy.
He is one of the least known astronauts.
He chose a dangerous career despite having a wife and children.

Why he might not be annoying:

His hobbies are reading and classical music.
Although entering NASA as a scientist he was already a qualified pilot.
He was a doctor and a Captain in the Naval Medical Corp.
While working at the Johnson Space Center he worked to improve astronaut's health while in space.
He was one of the CAPCOM's which brought the Apollo 13 crew home to Earth.
