The Resume

    (February 16, 1965- )
    Born in Angers, France
    Born Valerie Massonneau
    Companion of Francois Hollande
Master of Advanced Studies in political science, Sorbonne
Political (later cultural) journalist for Magazine Paris Match
Separated from Hollande (January 25, 2014)

Why she might be annoying:

Her last name is pronounced something like ‘traveler.’
Her innocent Twitter messages backing Segolene Royal's opponent (Olivier Falorni) served as a counter to Hollande’s support for his ex-partner (leading to comparisons to vaudeville and Dallas).
Her affair with Hollande went public just days after his breakup with Royal.
She was none-too-pleased with a Paris Match article pegging her as ‘Francois Hollande's charming asset; the story of how their love was born’ (which inspired another blunt tweet).
She has at least two divorces.
She considers herself far better suited to handling life as a foreign First Lady than Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (‘she came from a world totally alien to that of politics’).
And yet, for assaulting a male colleague over perceived sexism, she was nicknamed Rottweiler.
She began a review of an Eleanor Roosevelt biography with, ‘Look that! A journalist First Lady isn’t a novelty.’

Why she might not be annoying:

Her grandfather and great grandfather ran a family-owned bank.
Her father lost his leg to a landmine in World War II at age 13.
She had no children during her first marriage but had three in her second.
A national journalist answered her comparisons to Bruni that Bruni was a total class act.
Although she encouraged him to shed a few pounds, she had no problem with Hollande’s overweight build.
Vogue Magazine compared her looks to Lauren Bacall.
    ‘I’m not Cinderella.’
She was hospitalized after a tabloid claimed Hollande was cheating on her. (January 17, 2014)
