    Baroque composer
    Composed vocal music, arias, motets, sacred concertos (i.e. cantatas) and 11 Magnificat settings. 94 organ fugues on the Magnificat, organ variations and preludes on chorales; suites for two violins, Canon and Gigue for 3 violins, Musikalisches Ergtzen; six sets of variations for harpsichord Hexachordum Apollinis (1699)

    He was baptized in Nuremberg, Germany (September 1, 1653).
    He moved to Vienna where he became a student & deputy organist to Kerll at the Imperial Chapel (1671).
    He married his first wife, Barbara Gabler (October 25, 1681).
    His wife & son died during a plague (September 1683).
    He married Judith Drommer (August 24, 1684).
    He died at 53 and was buried in Nuremberg Germany (March 9, 1706).
    He was known as one of the great organ masters of the generation before J.S. Bach.
    His son Wilheim Hieronymous Pachelbel was also an organist & composer.
    His popular Canon in D major was written for 3 violins & a continuo and was published with a gigue in the same key.
    All of his work is in a contrapuntal simple style.
    His organ compositions show a knowledge of Italian forms derived from Frescobaldi.
    He taught organ & one of his pupils was Johann Christoph Bach, who in turn gave his younger brother Johann Sebastian Bach his first keyboard lessons.
    He studied organ at Altdorf and Regensburg & held posts as organist in Vienna, Stuttgart and other cities.
    He was appointed organist in 1695 at the St. Sebaalduskirch in Nuremberg, where he remained until his death.
    Canon in D is one of the most popular and recognizable pieces of classical music of all time.
