    He hoped to play baseball in college, but there were no offers that were given to him.
    He frequently threw bean balls as he became injury prone.
    He hit three batters during the 1971 World Series, establishing a record for number of batters being hit by a pitch in World Series play.
    He gave up the pitch for Pete Rose's 2,500th hit (August 17, 1975).
    He got into a fight with Mike Schmidt after he threw a bean ball at him (1977).
    His rotator cuff was torn as it ended his major league career.

    During his final year in high school, he pitched three no-hitters.
    He flew on a helicopter to his wedding following the Pirates' 1971 World Series victory on the same day (October 17, 1971).
    He was the Pirates' key player as he guided them to win two World Series titles.
