The Resume

    (March 19, 1937- )
Born in Kolberg, Germany (now Kolobrzeg, Poland)
Last Communist head of state of East Germany (October 18-December 3, 1989)

Why he might be annoying:

He was the former head of East Germany's repressive state security force.
He was nicknamed 'teacher's pet' for his sycophancy to his predecessor, hardliner Erich Honecker.
He praised China's massacre of protesters in Tiananmen Square.
He lasted in power only 50 days.
He served four years in prison (1999-2003) for manslaughter of Germans attempting to escape over the Berlin Wall.
Unlike several other former officials, he refused to apologize and continued to defend East Germany's actions.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was seven, his family was expelled from their home as the Polish border shifted west.
He was chosen to be a more moderate leader.
In his first address to the nation, he promised democratic reforms.
Despite his opinions on Tiananmen Square, he flew to Leipzig to cancel orders from Erich Honecker to the army to fire on demonstrators.
