Why he might be annoying:

His songwriting collaborator, Twyla Herbert, was a self-proclaimed gypsy and psychic who claimed she could predict which songs would be hits.
His hits all feature the same vocal style: verses sung in his normal register followed by a leap to falsetto for the chorus.
That falsetto caused him to be confused with Frankie Valli.
'Rhapsody in the Rain' was banned by many radio stations, forcing him to change the line 'We were making out in the rain' to 'We fell in love in the rain.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His record company changed his name without his approval.
During a tour with The Supremes, he had an affair with Diana Ross.
He successfully came back after his career was interrupted by a two-year stint in the army (1963-65).
His songs have been used in the movies 'Rain Man,' 'Barcelona,' 'The Last Days of Disco' and 'Before Sunrise.'
