    He played in his first pro event at Stanmore Golf Club without winning a prize a year before his only major championship win.
    The first U.S. Open he competed was originally going to be on September, but it got pushed to October because of the yacht races of the America's Cup.
    He lost to James Foulis in the second U.S. Open.
    He often struggled in the U.S. Open from the late 19th Century into the 20th Century.

    He beat the favourite Willie Dunn by two strokes to become the first golfer in the world to win a U.S. Open.
