    Hosted 'In the Kitchen with Chef Tell' on PBS

Why he might be annoying:

    He got the name 'Tell' from portraying William Tell in a school play.
    He titled his autobiography 'Chef Tell Tells All.'
    He had a heavy German accent.
    He claimed to be the inspiration for the Swedish Chef muppet, but Brian Henson denied that the character was based on any real-life chef.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Restaurant critic Elaine Tait wrote, 'He was the first of the great showman chefs. Up until his era, chefs stayed in the kitchen.'
    He had diabetes and wrote a cookbook for fellow diabetics.
    He baked the cake for Donald Duck's 50th birthday celebration at Disney World (1984).
    Richard Nixon would patronize his restaurant when visiting his daughter Julie in Pennsylvania and later sponsored his application for US citizenship (1986).
