    Received Médicis Prize (1974) and Rubén Darío Order of Cultural Independence (1983)
    Worked for UNESCO as a translator
    Received French citizenship (1981)
    Died in Paris

Why he might be annoying:

    He was sickly as a child.
    He supported Fidel Castro and the Sandinistas despite his opposition to human rights abuses.
    'Hopscotch' has 155 chapters, but only the first 56 of them were crucial to the main plot; the rest were filler for subplots and minor characters.
    His first marriage, which started in 1953, ended 14 years later due to his infidelity.
    There were two conflicting reports on his cause of death; some sources said he died from AIDS after receiving a blood transfusion while it was officially declared to be leukemia.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His father abandoned his family when he was six.
    He was called 'the Simón Bolívar of the novel' by Carlos Fuentes.
    His writings influenced an entire generation of Spanish-speaking readers and writers, both in the Americas and Europe.
    'Hopscotch' can be read like an interactive game where the reader rearranges the parts of the novel according to a plan.
    He was staunchly opposed to the Peron regime, which cost him his teaching job and compelled him to move to Paris in protest. (1951)
    He translated 'Robinson Crusoe', Marguerite Yourcenar's 'Memoirs of Hadrian', and Edgar Allan Poe's prose works into Spanish.
