The Resume

    (1993- )
    Formed in Newfoundland and Labrador
Albums include 'Great Big Sea,' 'Up,' 'Play,' 'Turn,' 'Road Rage,' 'Sea of No Cares,' 'Something Beautiful*' and 'The Hard and the Easy'
One concert DVD 'Great Big DVD' 2003
Alan Doyle (May 17, 1969, born in Petty Harbor, Canada - guitar, bouzuki, keyboards, percussion, banjo, mandolin, vocals)
S‚an McCann (Born in Carbonear, Canada - guitar, bodhran, percussion, vocals)
Bob Hallett (Born in St. John's, Canada - accordion, whistle, guitar, fiddle, bouzuki, mandolin, vocals)
Darrell Power (Born in Canada - bass guitar, percussion, vocals)

Why they might be annoying:

On 'Something Beautiful*' and 'Sea of No Cares,' there was little or no Newfoundland influence evident.
Power left the band after 'Sea of No Cares' to 'spend more time with his family.'
Doyle and Hallett have gained weight.
Their first album, 'Great Big Sea,' was recorded in a friend's basement.
Though McCann is the better singer and Hallett the better instrumentalist, Doyle gets all the media attention.
Their tour bus tipped onto its side in Vancouver (February 2006).
What's with the asterisk in 'Something Beautiful*?'
The concert on their first live DVD was quite sterile and didn't properly communicate the energy of 'being there.'
For some strange reason, their US label (Rounder) released a compilation album titled 'Rant and Roar,' but only of songs from 'Up' and 'Play.'

Why they might not be annoying:

They are loved throughout North America.
Despite their Newfoundland leanings, they have gathered a good-sized audience throughout the United States.
Power's reason for quitting the band was legit and not egotistical.
The band managed to carry on quite well, hiring an additional bass player and a drummer.
Their concerts are legendary for their energy and humor.
None of the band members have become conceited.
Many of their albums have gone Gold and Platinum.
They returned to their Newfoundland roots with 'The Hard and the Easy,' a traditional album released in 2005.
Séan's brother Glenn travels with the band, operating the merchandise table.
They held a 'kitchen party' contest on their 2005 tour, in which the winner in each city would have the band come to their house and play a short, private concert.
