TV Series
    (November 6, 1947- )
    Born in United States
Created by Lawrence E. Spivak and Martha Rountree
Hosted by Martha Rountree (1947-1953), Ned Brooks (1953-1965), Lawrence Spivak (1966-1975), Bill Monroe (journalist, 1975-1984), Roger Mudd (1984-1985), Marvin Kalb (1984-1987), Chris Wallace (1987-1988), Garrick Utley (1989-1991) and Tim Russert (1991- )
First-ever guest was James A. Farley, ex-chairman of the Democratic National Committee
‘If it’s Sunday, it’s Meet the Press’
It began broadcasting as a press conference format.
It actually started two years earlier — as a radio broadcast.
Only during Russert’s run did it change its half-hour format to a full hour (1992).
It took nearly a year to receive its first female guest (ex-Soviet spy Elizabeth Bentley, September 1948).
JFK referred to the show as ‘the 51st state.’
Its first moderator was female while all successors in the next 55 years were male.
It went on to become the longest-running program in the history of international TV broadcasting.
It is fiercely competitive with CBS News Sunday Morning.
Many world leaders, some of whom spoke no English, were guests.
The arrival of MSNBC allowed it to make excellent use of Internet resources — including MP3 and iPod downloads.
If newsworthy enough, an entertainer or athlete could be interviewed here.
