The Resume

    (May 6, 1951-September 9, 1990)
    Born in Tuzon, Liberia
    Krahn ethnicity
    Joined Liberian Army (1969)
Promoted to Master Sergeant (October 1979)
    Head of People's Redemption Council (April 12, 1980-January 6, 1986)
    President of Liberia (January 6, 1986-September 9, 1990)
Captured and assassinated by rebel warlord Prince Johnson

Why he might be annoying:

He was Liberia’s first military ruler.
He allegedly disemboweled President William Richard Tolbert, Jr. when he was sleeping.
He added a new holiday called National Redemption Day on April 12 in order to commemorate his seizure of power.
He won a supposedly rigged election in order to cling onto power.
He extensively engages in cronyism by favoring his ethnic group.
He owned lots of mansions and estates while most Liberians were suffering from poverty.
His relations with America worsened as his administration became increasingly corrupt and dictatorial.
He was extremely hostile to Liberia’s neighbors.
When Thomas Quiwonkpa led an unsuccessful coup against him, he ordered a crackdown against the Gio and Mano ethnicities, killing 3,000 people (November 12, 1985).
He frequently crushed dissent in Liberia up to the point that widespread rebellion broke out (1989).
His ‘People’s Redemption Council’ was dubbed as ‘People Repeating Corruption’ by Liberians.

Why he might not be annoying:

He wasn’t a descendant of freed African-American slaves, who ruled the country, but an indigenous Liberian.
Like most rural Liberians, his parents were poor and uneducated.
He was a skilled soldier who wasn’t interested in politics in the first place.
He improved relations with America for a while and was at one time a Cold War ally.
He turned Liberia into a tax haven by opening the country’s ports to Canadian, Chinese, and European ships.
His birthplace was pillaged by Charles Taylor’s rebel forces.
He was tortured by Prince Johnson, a mentally ill rebel who drank Budweiser as his ear was cut off.
