The year given for his birth varies from 1937 to 1941.
While in the US Navy, he was court-martialed for assaulting an officer.
He abused cocaine.
He was convicted of aggravated assault after shooting a man in a barroom fight and served two years in prison (1989-91).
He had to file for bankruptcy after being sued by the IRS for back taxes (1990).
His family could not afford the burial costs, so George Jones paid for his grave site and headstone.

He was married to his wife Sharon for over 30 years, until his death.
