    Born in Providence, Rhode Island
    Drafted first overall by the San Diego Padres in the 1974 Major League Baseball Draft
    Played for the San Diego Padres (1974-79), Montreal Expos (1980), New York Mets (1980, 1987), Chicago White Sox (1981-82), Oakland Athletics (1983-84), Pittsburgh Pirates (1985-87) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1988)

    He played on seven different teams.
    His major league debut game was best remembered for making a blunder that cost the Padres the lead and eventually the game.
    His surname sounds too close to almond.
    He looked rather skinny to be a baseball player.
    His hitting skills were not as good in the professional ranks as they were in college.

    He was the first player from an Ivy League school to be selected with the first overall pick.
    He was the third player in the 1970's to be drafted first overall by the Padres.

    He posted career highs in various offensive categories, during his first season with the White Sox (1981).
