Creator of 'The Smurfs' ('Les Schtroumpfs' in French) in the comic strip 'Johan et Pirlouit' (Johan & PeeWee)
First Smurf appearance was on October 23, 1958
Also created the story lines 'Poussy,' 'Pierrot' and 'Benoit Brisefer'

Why he might be annoying:

He created the Smurfs.
He went by a pretentious single name.
He took the name 'Peyo' from his English speaking cousin, who mispronounced the name of one of his strips ('Pierrot').
Smurfette aside, there is speculation about the Smurfs' gay overtones.
Barring Ashley Simpson's song 'La La,' is there any song more irritating than that insipid Smurf song, La - LA - lalalala?
Most of them look exactly the same (blue skin, white pants and hat). Papa Smurf, the patriarch, wears red pants and sports a beard. Smurfette wears a white dress and high heels (like a dirty whore).
A Smurf theme park opened in France in 1991, operating until 1998, then was purchased by Six Flags.
The Smurfs are a mild rip-off of the Seven Dwarfs (Lazy Smurf, Sleepy the dwarf).
There were three unexplained Smurflings and only one dirty whore Smurfette.

Why he might not be annoying:

Hanna-Barbera Productions created 256 episodes between 1981-1990. The show became a major success for NBC, winning numerous Emmy awards.
Episodes are currently running in over 30 countries and languages.
In 1983, conservative Christian groups in the US labeled the Smurfs as 'Satanic' -- due to the positive light in which their activities portrayed the use of magic and of sorcery.
Many famed folks lent their cartoon voices for the Smurfs, including June Foray, Paul Winchell and Alan Young.
He got to see his creation take off like gang busters and make a boatload of money before dying of a heart attack at age 64 (December 1992).
