    He became addicted to heroin.

    Record producer Paul Rothschild called him 'a total scumbag.'
    He retired from performing in the early 1970s.
    He became a recluse.

    His song 'Everybody's Talkin' became the theme to 'Midnight Cowboy' and a hit for Harry Nilsson.
    His songs were also recorded by Roy Orbison and Jefferson Airplane.
    He kicked heroin.
    After leaving music, he founded The Dolphin Project and became an environmental activist.
    He died of cancer in 2001.
