During his title rematch with Jack Dempsey he was the beneficiary of a 14 second 'long count.'
He defended his title only twice before retiring to marry steel heiress Polly Lauder.
He became alcoholic after his daughter murdered her husband and was committed to a mental hospital (1970).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with the Marines in WWI and the Navy in WWII.
His sole loss occurred when Harry Greb headbutted him, breaking his nose.
He was married to Polly for 50 years until his death.
