    Born in Greenville, Mississippi
    Wrote the novels 'Tournament' (1949), 'Follow Me Down' (1950), 'Love in a Dry Season' (1951), 'Shiloh: A Novel' (1952) and 'September, September' (1978)
    Wrote the three volume history 'The Civil War: A Narrative' (1958-74)
    Featured in the Ken Burns documentary 'The Civil War' (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a poor student who dropped out of college and said getting good grades was bowing to authority.
    He was dishonorably discharged from the Army for going AWOL to visit his girlfriend.
    He considered himself a novelist first, but is remembered mainly as a historian.
    Traditional historians criticized his refusal to use footnotes.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His father died when he was five.
    His novels were admired by fellow southern writers Eudora Welty and William Faulkner.
    He called pro-segregation politicians 'soft-talking instruments of real evil.'
    He explained his successful TV appearances by noting, 'I'm not worried if they like me or not, and that's a huge advantage. I wasn't self-conscious.'
    He joined Protect Historic America and helped prevent a Disney theme park from being built near battlefield sites in Virginia.
