Also appeared in ‘The Quartermass Experiment’ (1953), ‘In Search of the Castaways’ (1962), ‘The Three Lives of Thomasina’ (1964), ‘Witchfinder General’ (1968) and ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ (1978)

Why he might be annoying:

He was typecast playing old men while only in his 40s.
He drank heavily before rehearsals and frequently forgot his lines.
On a flight from New Zealand, he urinated in the captain’s cabin and was thrown off in Singapore.
He routinely told fans who greeted him in the street to ‘fuck off.’
He was arrested for having sex with another man in a public bathroom.

Why he might not be annoying:

He made his stage debut as a child entertaining soldiers during World War I.
His wife had a child with a student renting a room from the couple.
He was nothing like his scruffy Steptoe persona, being dapper and well-spoken.
The Beatles lobbied to have him cast in ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’
