He played the music of Mozart at a young people’s concert with the Chicago Symphony at age eleven.
After his first album, 'Takin' Off,' Miles Davis asked him to join his quintet.
He stayed in the Miles Davis Quintet for 5 years, and greatly influenced Miles Davis' evolving direction.
His first self-titled debut album with the Headhunters became the biggest-selling jazz album up to that time.
He is the musical director of the Tokyo Jazz Festival as well as a patron member of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.
His music is highly experimental.
He's been married to the same women for 30 years, and had one child with her.
He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1995.
He started an organization called the Rhythm of Life Organization, dedicated to using technology in a responsible way.
He's been a successful musician for more then 40 years, and still has a strong following.
