Why he might be annoying
He converted to Roman Catholicism and began replacing Protestants with Catholics.
The majority of the population was Protestant and so the invited protestant, William of Orange, was asked to enter England and fight King James.
William defeated James, and James fled to Ireland (1688).
William also defeated James at the Battle of the Boyne and James fled to France (1690).
Why he might not be annoying
He publicly converted to Roman Catholicism (1672).
Parliament passed the Test Acts disqualifying Catholics from holding office, so he resigned as lord high Admiral.
He crushed his nephew's revolt.
