Why he might be annoying
He is the only president not to marry.
As President, he was engaged to Ann Coleman, but they quarrelled and broke the engagement, she died shortly after.
He was unable to resolve the critical slavery issue and the country was on the verge of civil war.
His Democratic party splintered into two groups, neither interested in him as a nominee (1860).
As a lame duck president, after Lincoln's election, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, seceded.
Congress did not trust him, when he had the opportunity to buy Cuba for only $90,000,000 they believe it was an attempt for him to steal the money and leave.
Why he might not be annoying
He cared for his orphaned niece, Harriet Lane, who served as hostess, in lieu of a first lady.
He was so heartbroken by the death of his former fiancee he never married.
He slept in the hallway offering England's Prince of Wales and his friends his bedroom (1860).
He had the neatest handwriting of all the presidents.
Minnesota, Oregon and Kansas were admitted to the union during his administartion (1858, 1859, 1861).
When he handed the the White House to Abraham Lincoln he said:, 'If you are as happy, my dear sir, on entering this house as I am in leaving it and returning home, you are the happiest man in this country.'
