    Birth name is Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana
    Joined the Convent of Santa Paula of the Hieronymite, Mexico City at age 18
    Best known literary works are 'The Dream,' a poetic sequence and 'Loa to Divine Narcissus,' an allegorical drama

Why she might be annoying:

    She became a nun mainly so she could have unlimited time to read and write.
    She had a melodramatic streak and once signed a letter 'I, the worst of all women.'
    Her dense, baroque style can confuse modern readers.
    She said only women should teach girls as male instructors might try to seduce them.
    Her plays, like TV sitcoms, often feature foolish men and wise women.
    A Canadian writer spent 12 years writing a 1300 page novel about her.

    She was born out of wedlock and deserted by her father.
    She was a child prodigy who could read and write Latin as a toddler.
    She plotted unsuccessfully to disguise herself as a boy and enrol at university.
    She said 'One can perfectly well philosophize while cooking supper.'
