Why he might be annoying:

He originally called it an 'Apparatus for Treating Air.'
The intent of the invention was not for comfort but rather to assist a printer who's color inks misaligned due to the heat and humidity (1902).

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated Cornell University with a Masters in Electrical Engineering (1901).
Razor blade, film, pharmaceutical, bakeries, meat packers, soap manufacturer and many other industries found they could greatly improve their products with his invention.
The first air conditioner for comfort was used by J.L. Hudson Department Store in Detroit to keep customers cool (1924).
Movie theater owners installed air conditioning to attract viewers.
10% of American homes were air conditioned, by 1965, thirty years later it could be found in 75% of U.S. homes (1995)
He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall Of Fame (1985).
