He grew up taking care of his mother, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis and became confined to a wheelchair as a result.
He founded the ziMS Foundation, which helps raise money to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.
He was a highly touted prospect, while attending the University of Virginia.
He was the first player selected by the Nationals following the team's relocation from Montreal.
