    He was one of nine children.
    When Ed Bailey, Johnny Temple, Roy McMillan, Don Hoak, Gus Bell and Frank Robinson made the 1957 NL All-Star team, he was disqualified after the Redlegs fans stuffed the vote ballots.
    He was the NL leader 3 times for being struck out (1955, 1956 and 1959).
    Despite hitting a home run in Game 5 of the 1961 World Series, the Reds lost to the Yankees in 5 games.

    He helped his high school baseball team win the state championship.
    He appeared in 154 games during the 1955 season.
    His arm had accurate throwing.
    He recorded his own career high of 40 home runs and 109 RBIs with a .309 batting average (1955).
    He hit the very first home run at Dodger Stadium (April 10, 1962).
    He ended Hank Aaron's 6 episode winning streak on the TV game show 'Home Run Derby.'
