Victim

The Resume

    (1952-March 27, 2010)
    Cochise County, Arizona rancher
35,000-acre ranch located along the Arizona-Mexico border
Shot to death at age 58 while patrolling his ranch on his ATV
Shortly beforehand radioed his brother about seeing an immigrant in need of help and to call the Border Patrol
Murder was the flashpoint for the passing of Arizona Senate Bill 1070 (aka the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act), making it legal for law enforcement officers to stop any person where reasonable suspicion that person's immigration status is in question

Why he might be annoying:

The bill, signed by Arizona governor Jan Brewer, was hastily passed into law on April 23, 2010, less than a month after his murder.
It was never determined if the killer was a legal or illegal immigrant, or if the person was or wasn't part of a drug smuggling operation.
His murder gave momentum to the passing of the controversial law, which smacks of racial profiling.
After his murder, gun sales in the region rose 20%, and former 2008 U.S. Presidential candidate (and strong opponent of illegal immigration) Tom Tancredo immediately called for the National Guard to secure the border.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a fourth generation rancher whose great-grandfather owned the land in the 19th century, before Arizona became a state.
He and his family were honored with the 2008 induction into the ArizonaFarming and Ranching Hall of Fame.
By and large, he was sympathetic toward immigrants he saw on his land, radioing if they needed medical assistance and stating, 'If they come and ask for water, I'll still give them water. You know, that's just my nature.'
Federal agents arrested eight smugglers and seized 250 pounds of marijuana on his ranch the day before his murder.
The killer also shot his dog to death.
He had no control over opportunists using his murder as a rallying cry for passage of a law that became a hotbed of controversy.
