She wrote two autobiographies.
She was a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
She was dubbed the Jackie Robinson of ballet.
The early years of her dance career were sullied by a bitter custody war between her mother and her ballet instructors (who acted as custodial guardians).
The custody battle involved filings for emancipation by Copeland, and a restraining order against the instructors filed by her mother, who even hired Gloria Allred to represent her.
Both sides dropped legal proceedings after she opted to move home and begin studying ballet under a new teacher.
