    (May 5, 1813-November 11, 1855)
Wrote 'Either/Or,' 'Fear and Trembling,' 'The Sickness Unto Death' and 'Concluding the Unscientific Postscript'
He wasn't a very cheery guy.
As a boy, his father instilled a fanatical religious devotion in him that warped his mind.
He believed that his family became doomed when his father had cursed God.
He believed that Christianity was irrational, and that, that was the reason why it should be accepted.
His works were all published under pen names like, 'Victor Eremita,' 'Judge William,' 'Hilarius Bookbinder,' 'Johannes Climacus' to name a few.
His last name literally meant 'Church yard.'
He suffered from an extreme melancholy his whole life and always doubted himself.
He dearly loved his fiancé Regine, and although she reciprocated his love, he forced her to break the engagement.
When writing on why he did this, he said, '...If I had not been a penitent...if I has not had my depression--marriage to her would have made me happier than I had ever dreamed of becoming. But being the person I unfortunately am, I must say that I could become happier in my unhappiness without her than with her--she had touched me deeply, and I willingly, would have done everything.'
Realizing that breaking up his engagement might permanently soil Regine's reputation and prevent her from ever marrying, he pretended to be having several public affairs, thereby forcing her to dump him and maintaining her image.
In 1843 alone, he published 6 books.
He was strongly opposed to the way that Christianity was practiced in his time and believed that it needed to be brought back to what was described in the New Testament.
He is considered one of the godfathers of existentialism.
