    Best known today for her correspondence from the Middle East
    Had a famous friendship, and later falling out, with Alexander Pope

Why she might be annoying:

    She was notorious for her poor hygiene.
    Her friendship with Alexander Pope turned into a feud when she laughed at his declaration of love.
    She bankrupted a lover after she made a bad investment with his money.
    She said the only good thing about being a woman was it meant she didn’t have to marry one.
    Many found her cold and sarcastic.
    She became estranged from her son.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She eloped when her father tried to marry her off to man she didn’t love.
    Smallpox ruined her looks when she was in her 20s.
    She was the first woman to write extensively of the Middle East.
    She introduced the British to an early form of small pox inoculation from Turkey.
    Alexander Pope paid her back for her rejection with years of slander.
    Her paintings turned up on Antiques Roadshow.
    Her last words were ‘It has all been most interesting.’
