Because of his early Roman Catholic study, he did not believe that man should question God.
He stated 'Know thyself, presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind is man.'
He was a vegetarian.

At 12 years old, an illness left him crippled, so he was forced to drop out of school.
He continued his studies on his own.
His works made him wealthy enough to purchase a villa in Twickenham (1719).
He said 'A man should never be ashamed to admit that he has been in the wrong, which is but saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.'
