Wrote the novels 'Almayer's Folly,' 'An Outcast of the Islands,' 'The Nigger of the Narcissus,' 'Lord Jim,' 'The Inheritors,' 'Romance,' 'Nostromo,' 'The Secret Agent,' 'Under Western Eyes,' 'Chance,' 'Victory,' 'The Shadow-Line: A Confession,' 'The Arrow of Gold,' 'The Rescue,' 'The Rover' and 'The Nature of a Crime'
Wrote the short stories 'Youth: A Narrative,' 'Heart of Darkness,' 'The End of the Tether,' 'Typhoon and Other Stories,' 'A Set of Six,' 'Twixt Land and Sea,' 'Within the Tides' and 'Tales of Hearsay'

His birth name would be pretty hard to say three times fast.
He had a gambling problem which led him to gaining huge debts.
His debts got so bad that he would eventually try to commit suicide by shooting himself in the chest.
He refused knighthood from Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald (1924).

He learned English at age eight, when his father began teaching him about Shakespeare.
He spent 16 years in England's Navy.
At the age of 32, he traveled down the Congo as the captain of a Congo river steamboat. His experience traveling down the Congo would be the basis for his book, 'Heart of Darkness.'
'Heart of Darkness' was turned into the Francis Ford Coppola movie 'Apocalypse Now.'
He died of a heart attack.
