Why he might be annoying:

He was addicted to chloroform.
He was jailed for spraying two women with sulfuric acid (1848).
He committed suicide by slashing open his thighs while in prison (1848).

Why he might not be annoying:

He and his wife went to a traveling show in which Quincy Colton demonstrated laughing gas (nitrous oxide).
Wells noticed that under the effects of the gas, one person walked into a chair but apparently felt no pain, thus he saw the use of nitrous oxide as an anesthesia (December 10, 1844).
He experimented with the gas and under its influence had his tooth pulled.
After various experiments he perfected an anesthesia and presented it to the medical community (1845).
