Why he might be annoying:

Once a Catholic priest, he ended up starting his own religion.
He was amazingly arrogant and incredibly intolerant of opinions conflicting with his.
He compared the Pope to the Antichrist.
He called for the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.
He called women rulers 'abominable.'
He denied other people the religious freedom he sought for himself and his followers.
His sermons sometimes lasted over two hours and led to riots on several occasions.
His second wife was 17 and he was 50 when they married.
To believe what he taught is to believe that Christianity was one big mistake until he came along.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was extremely intelligent and clearly an outstanding leader.
He stuck by his guns no matter what.
He was a galley slave of the French for a time.
He lived very frugally, took only enough money to survive and subsequently died broke.
There was never any type of sexual or financial scandal attached to his name.
He was exiled from his beloved Scotland several times.
