    Brother of Olympian/WWE wrestler Ken Patera

    He spent most of his playing career in losing teams.
    He is divorced after over 40 years of marriage.
    His playing career was cut short due to an injury and only appeared in two games in the 1961 season.
    He was a strict disciplinarian as a head coach.

    He was instrumental in directing two defensive lines, the Rams' Fearsome Foursome and the Vikings' Purple People Eaters.
    He enjoyed hunting and mountain climbing.
    He was with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant coach as the team went into three Super Bowl appearances (1970, 1974, 1975).
    He was the original head coach of the Seahawks.
