The Resume

    (1922- )
    Formed in Santa Barbara, California
Formed by the seven biggest Hollywood studios
Maintained the Hays Production Code and the current MPAA film rating system
    Film ratings (as of 2006): G, PG, PG13, R, NC-17
Former presidents include Will H. Hays, Eric Johnston, Ralph Hetzel and Jack Valenti

Why Motion Picture Association of America might be annoying:

It was Jack Valenti's fiefdom for what seemed like centuries.
They have the gall to destroy our eyes with that ugly green screen at the beginning of previews.
They are self-appointed moral experts that do not answer to the public.
Their ratings are arbitrary and they usually do not bother to explain them in depth.
Roger Ebert wrote that their rating system is, 'guided by the greed of the movie industry and its fear of the religious right.'
They bully directors to take scenes that they find offensive out of movies.
Their NC-17 rating kills all but the cheapest of art films.
They helped create and enforce the Hollywood blacklist.
When the VCR became popular, their president compared it to a rapist and fought against it.
Despite their tough copyright lobbying, they were caught trying to make illegal copies of films submitted for rating consideration.

Why Motion Picture Association of America might not be annoying:

Their X (now NC-17) rating helped market pornography.
They claim they help guide parents.
They prevent the theft of intellectual property (that is, if they aren't doing it).
They inform of a film's content, thus protecting adults from the excruciating experience of accidentally viewing sexual scenes.
