Why he might be annoying:

He was overshadowed by Lear in their partnership.
His first series after splitting with Lear was the short-lived 'Sanford and Son' spin-off 'Grady.'
His ex-wife Peg got $40 million in their divorce settlement.
His second wife, actress Cynthia Sikes, was only five years older than his daughter Nicole.

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War II, he served in the Pacific with the US Army Air Forces installing sonar systems.
William Friedkin said Yorkin was 'one of the three very best live variety directors when live TV was at its peak.'
He won Emmys for writing and directing the variety special 'An Evening with Fred Astaire.' (1959)
While directing a film in England, he saw an episode of 'Til Death Do Us Part,' a British series about an outspoken bigot and his liberal son-in-law, and brought it to Lear's attention, paving the way for 'All in the Family.'
Similarly, he suggested to Lear remaking the British sitcom Steptoe and Son as a vehicle for Redd Foxx, resulting in 'Sanford and Son.'
