The Resume

    (July 5, 2000- )
    CBS
Premise: contestants (sometimes called ‘hamsters’) sequestered in a small Los Angeles household fight for control
Based on a character appearing in ‘1984’ by George Orwell

Why Big Brother might be annoying:

It is basically a rip off of MTV's 'Real World.'
It is normally aired three times a week.
Players appear to have no contact with the outside world for as long as they’re sequestered (but depending on the reward, they sometimes do).
The PB&J diet (peanut butter and jelly) is a constant. Sometimes players go full weeks with just that.
    Booze is almost always available.
It airs only during the summer (July to September).
Contestants tend to be chosen based less on personalities than on types.
For a game that lasts about three months, the grand prize is $500 K — just over twice as long as Survivor for half as much.
There are cameras and microphones almost everywhere in the house, with little – if any – privacy.
    Julie Chen continues to host.
The CBS website no longer keeps information on the original series.

Why Big Brother might not be annoying:

It has been hailed as one of the most emotionally involving series of its genre.
It is a European phenomenon. There are versions in the UK, Australia, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Denmark.
In the first season, viewers decided whom to eliminate. In subsequent seasons, the Head of Household nominated two other ‘hamsters,’ and the remaining players voted on one or the other to remove.
The fourth season (2003) brought ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends into the household. The fifth season (2004) focused on twins. There is always a twist at the start or down the road.
Like Survivor, it is necessary to (1) scheme and plot properly, (2) avoid bad habits, (3) deal well with others, and (4) stay cool under fire.
Unlike Survivor, a solid alliance works only for the first few weeks. It is therefore impossible to stay in the game without eventually jumping between alliances.
Still unlike Survivor, international versions continue to do well in the ratings.
Unlike the Orwell story, players do not have to (and rarely do) speak the same, act the same, or think the same.
