Why he might be annoying:

    He dropped out of college to take a job as a cub reporter.
    He divorced and quickly married his second wife (1927). He cheated on her for four years with the woman who became his third wife (1940).
    He crashed while driving drunk, when his wife complained about his drunk driving, he divorced her and remarried (1944).
    He received a dozen shock treatments. He suffered from severe depression.
    He abused alcohol.
    His alcohol abuse may have cause his memory loss.
    At sixty-one he committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth (July 2, 1961).
    He left many unfinished works at his death.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During World War I he drove an ambulance, and his leg was wounded by shrapnel.
    'A Farewell To Arms' is based on his relationship with army nurse Agnes von Kurowsky who helped him recover.
    'A Farewell To Arms' is considered the best American World War I novel.
    His father committed suicide because he suffered painful angina, extreme headaches and was in financial trouble (December 1928).
    Five million purchased the September 1952 Life Magazine that contained his 'The Old Man and the Sea,' and he still sold 50,000 hardcover copies.
    He won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for 'The Old Man and the Sea' (1953).
    When his plane crashed and caught fire he fractured his skull, which he used as a battering ram, to open the door (January, 1954).
    He won the Nobel Prize for Literature, (October 28, 1954).
