Why he might be annoying:

He was driving drunk in the crash that paralyzed him.
He attempted suicide on several occasions.
He said, 'Once I finish a record, I don't listen to it again. I don't like listening to myself.'
He credited a change in his lyrics to shoplifting a Norton poetry anthology.

He said, 'It was only after I broke my neck that I really started realizing that I had something to say.'
He was a favorite of critics and fellow musicians.
His first two albums were produced by Michael Stipe, who called him one of the ten best songwriters in America.
His songs were covered on the second 'Sweet Relief' benefit album to raise funds for musicians without health insurance.
