Football Coach

The Resume

    (December 30, 1953- )
    Born in Kinston, North Carolina
Assistant coach of the football programs at Michigan State (1977), Central Michigan (1978-79), Michigan State (1980-82), North Carolina State (1983-85), Rice (1986-88) and Stanford (1989-91)
Running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings (1992-94)
Head coach of the football programs at Stanford (1995-2001), Notre Dame (2002-04), and the University of Washington (2005-08)

Why he might be annoying:

He wasn't the first choice for the head coaching job at Notre Dame.
He only landed the job after it was revealed that Notre Dame's initial hire, George O'Leary, fudged his resume.
His firing at Notre Dame was controversial, as the school claimed it was for performance, but some claim it was racially motivated.
He was considered too stiff of a head coach, which led to him having an acrimonious relationship with boosters as a result.
His teams had a reputation of being hyped, but were unable to back it up with their play.

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned the Stanford head coaching job, despite having no previous experience as a coordinator.
His 44 wins at Stanford were the most by a head coach in the years following John Ralston's departure.
He was the first African-American to serve as a head coach of an athletic team at Notre Dame.
He is the first Notre Dame head coach to win 10 games in his first season at the helm.
He was known to hold his players accountable, going as far as showing up at their classes unannounced to make sure they were attending.
