He started managing in the high school ranks, where he guided a Charlotte area high school to its first winning season in 20 years.
He initially established himself in the Cardinals organization as a scout, before working as a manager in the team's minor league ranks.
He guided the Cardinals to a 41-28 record, earning the managerial job on a permanent basis.
He led the Cardinals to the National League Central Division title on the last day of the regular season in his first full season at the helm (2019).
His laid back managerial style made him popular amongst his players.
