His attempts to transfer from Holy Cross to Notre Dame were rejected three times.
In the movie 'Rudy,' head coach Dan Devine is shown not wanting Ruettiger to dress up for the final game, when using him was actually Devine's idea.
Devine said he agreed to let the movie portray him as the heavy as a favor to Ruettiger, but noted 'I didn't realize I would be such a heavy.'
He told Newsday after his 24th viewing of 'Rudy' that he still 'cries every time.'
He was sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for allegedly deceiving investors to buy stock in his sports drink company (December 16, 2011).
After a friend died in an explosion at the steel mill where he worked, he decided at 23 to follow his dream of playing football at Notre Dame.
Despite initially lacking the money and grades to attend Notre Dame and being undersized for football (5'7, 165 pounds), he pulled it off.
He sacked the Georgia Tech quarterback on the second and last play of his career.
He was the first player carried off the field by his teammates in Notre Dame history.
He established the Rudy Foundation to benefit children's advocacy programs.
