Why he might be annoying:

When he was a sportscaster, he sometimes started an assessment of a player/coach with, 'OK, you are (insert name here).' He would then continue to assess that person in the second person.
He overused the word, 'upside,' as in 'this player has major upside.'
He has the Julius Caesar haircut.
He grew a grizzly grey beard when he coached the Knicks.
He has the reputation of being impatient, pompous, and vulgar.
He has an overall losing coaching record.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is an intense disciplinarian.
He led the Grizzlies to unprecedented franchise success despite disappearing from coaching for 15 years.
At 70, he is the oldest ever NBA Coach of the Year (2004).
When asked how an old guy like him can relate to young players, he replied: 'It's not about your age; it's about the substance of the sport and what you're teaching.'
