Baseball Player

The Resume

    (April 20, 1988- )
    Born in Palm Bay, Florida
    Pitcher
Plays for the San Francisco Giants (2014 - )
Pitched the 17th no-hitter, against the New York Mets, in Giants franchise history (Jun. 9, 2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He was dubbed 'the veteran rookie.'
He inspired the trending Twitter meme, #HestoNono.
He was drafted by both the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals, but didn't sign with either team (2007-2008).
His no-hitter surprised everyone mainly because of its sheer randomness.
Case in point, his 2013-2014 depth chart rankings had been embarrassingly inconsistent.
Like Colin Kaepernick, his unexpected jolt from obscurity came from the team's star player being on the injured list.
He claimed to not have even looked at his phone, after the June 9th game, when asked how many congratulatory texts he received.
His no-hitter resulted in predictable conspiracy theories claiming that the whole thing was 'rigged' or 'a hoax.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was ranked as the Giants organization's #25 best prospect by Baseball America.
His reaction in the aftermath of the no-hitter was one of genuine surprise and humility.
He is the first Giants rookie to throw a no-hitter since 1912 (and the first overall rookie to do so in eight years).
He closed his no-hitter with 3 strikeouts in the 9th inning, a feat unaccomplished since Sandy Koufax in his '65 perfect game against Cubs.
He helped the Giants to make history as the first team to throw a no-hitter in four straight seasons since the Dodgers in the 1962-65 seasons.
He had received a thrashing from the Pittsburgh Pirates a week prior to the no-hitter, leading many to believe his days with the Giants were numbered.
He had also been released by the Giants once, already, although he was able to regain footing playing for the Minor Leagues.
After the game he was approached by Buster Posey who gave him one of his infamous 'bear hugs' causing his 'no-hitter baseball' to bounce out of his glove (it was saved and returned to him later that night).
He is one of the rare embodiments of the feel-good 'Cinderella story' of persistence/hard-work in contemporary American sports.
